Direct Dutch Institute runs a calendar of free and low-cost events throughout the year, designed to give Dutch learners extra practice outside the classroom. If you are learning Dutch in The Hague, these events are worth knowing about.
Spreek Nederlands Middag
The flagship free event is the Spreek Nederlands Middag (Speak Dutch Afternoon), held regularly at the Central Library in The Hague. It is an informal gathering where learners at all levels can practice speaking Dutch in a low-pressure setting. Native speakers and teachers are present to guide conversations. You do not need to be a Direct Dutch student to attend.
Discover Dutch days
Direct Dutch runs periodic Discover Dutch introductory sessions, free sample lessons where prospective students can experience the teaching method before committing to a course. These are particularly useful for absolute beginners who want to see what a classroom environment feels like. The next confirmed date is Sunday, May 31, 2026.
Reading clubs and cultural events
Direct Dutch has run a reading club for non-native speakers for over fifteen years. Participants read Dutch literature together, building vocabulary and cultural knowledge. Films, discussion evenings, and seasonal events round out the calendar.
How to stay updated
The full event calendar is published on the Direct Dutch website and updated regularly. Events are typically free or low-cost, and many are open to the public, not just enrolled students.
